Can Pilates Improve Your Sex Life? What the Latest Research Says

At Serendipity Wellness, I often talk about the many benefits of Pilates. Improved strength, better posture, increased flexibility, reduced aches and pains, and greater confidence in your body are just some of the reasons women come to class.

But a recent study has highlighted another potential benefit that many people don't often talk about: sexual wellbeing.

A study published in BMC Urology found that women who participated in a 12-week Pilates programme reported improvements in desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain during intimacy compared to women who did not take part in the programme.

Researchers also found that the women practising Pilates experienced a reduction in depressive symptoms, reinforcing the powerful connection between physical movement, mental wellbeing, and overall quality of life.

Why Might Pilates Help?

While Pilates isn't a magic solution for every concern, the findings make a lot of sense when we consider what Pilates is designed to do.

Pilates Supports the Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor plays an important role in bladder control, core stability, and sexual function. Many Pilates exercises encourage awareness and activation of these deep supporting muscles, helping to improve strength, coordination, and function.

Pilates Improves Body Awareness

One of the things I love most about Pilates is that it helps you reconnect with your body. Through mindful movement and focused breathing, many women develop greater confidence, comfort, and appreciation for what their body can do.

Pilates Helps Manage Stress

Stress affects every aspect of our health, including intimacy and relationships. Pilates can help calm the nervous system, reduce tension, and create space for relaxation—something many of us need more of in our busy lives.

Pilates Can Boost Confidence

Feeling stronger, moving more freely, and standing taller often has a positive impact on self-esteem. When we feel good in our bodies, that confidence tends to ripple into other areas of life too.

A Holistic View of Wellbeing

Sexual wellbeing is influenced by many factors. Physical health, hormones, emotional wellbeing, relationships, communication, sleep, stress levels, and self-confidence all play a role.

That's why I believe Pilates is so valuable. It's never just about the exercises. It's about helping you move better, feel stronger, reduce stress, and reconnect with yourself.

The benefits often extend far beyond the mat.

The Bottom Line

This latest research adds to the growing body of evidence supporting Pilates as a powerful tool for overall wellbeing. While more research is needed, the findings suggest that regular Pilates practice may contribute positively to sexual health by improving physical function, body awareness, confidence, and mental wellbeing.

Whether your goal is to strengthen your core, ease aches and pains, improve balance, reduce stress, or simply carve out some time for yourself, Pilates offers benefits that reach into every aspect of life.

And that, perhaps, is what makes it such a powerful practice.

If you'd like to experience the benefits of Pilates for yourself, I'd love to welcome you to one of my classes at Serendipity Wellness.

Because feeling stronger, calmer, and more connected to your body is something every woman deserves.
