Why Women in Midlife Feel Exhausted All the Time
If you’re in your 40s or 50s and wondering why you feel tired all the time, even when you’re doing everything you used to do, you’re not alone.
This is one of the most common conversations I have with women in my Pilates classes and wellness sessions. Women who are strong, capable, and used to managing busy lives suddenly find themselves feeling worn out, foggy, or like their energy never quite comes back.
It can be frustrating, and sometimes a little worrying, especially when there isn’t one clear reason.
Midlife is a time when several things change at once, and they can all affect how your body feels day to day.
Hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause can impact sleep, mood, metabolism, and how your nervous system responds to stress. Even small changes in oestrogen and progesterone can make you feel more sensitive to pressure, less resilient, and slower to recover after busy days.
Sleep can also become lighter or more broken, which means you may not be getting the deep rest your body needs, even if you’re in bed for long enough.
On top of that, many women in midlife are carrying more responsibility than ever. Work, family, relationships, caring roles, and the constant mental load of keeping everything running can leave very little time to switch off properly.
When the nervous system stays in a state of “on alert” for too long, the body eventually becomes exhausted. Not because you’re not coping, but because you’ve been coping for a very long time.
This is why the answer isn’t always to push yourself harder.
In fact, for many women, intense exercise, strict routines, or expecting yourself to perform at the same level you did ten years ago can make fatigue worse rather than better.
What often helps more in midlife is learning how to support your body differently.
Gentle, consistent movement like Pilates can help rebuild strength without overwhelming the nervous system. Slower breathing helps bring the body out of stress mode. Rest, even in small amounts, allows energy to return instead of being constantly used up.
You don’t need to become a different person.
You just need a different pace for this stage of life.
Feeling tired all the time isn’t a personal failure.
Very often, it’s a sign that your body is asking for more support, more balance, and a little more kindness than it used to need.
