Your Nervous System Doesn’t Need Resetting; It Needs Flexibility

If you’ve spent any time on social media lately, you’ve probably heard that your nervous system is dysregulated.

You might have been told you need to “reset” it.

To calm it.

To regulate it.

To get out of fight-or-flight.

And suddenly, your nervous system can feel like yet another thing you’re supposed to be managing perfectly.

But what if the goal isn’t to have a perfectly calm nervous system?

What if the goal is flexibility?

Because your nervous system isn’t designed to keep you calm all the time.

It’s designed to help you respond.

Sometimes you need energy, focus and alertness.

Sometimes you need to slow down.

Sometimes you need to mobilise.

Sometimes you need to rest.

The magic is being able to move between those states rather than feeling stuck in one.

And this is where Somalates® comes in.

So, what does nervous-system flexibility actually mean?

Think about a dimmer switch rather than an on/off switch.

A flexible nervous system can move up and down the dial depending on what’s happening around you.

You might feel energised before teaching a Pilates class.

You might feel focused when you're working.

You might feel activated when something unexpected happens.

And afterwards, your body can gradually soften, your breathing can slow and you can settle.

That's flexibility.

It isn't about never feeling stressed.

It's about developing your ability to notice what's happening and respond rather than automatically react.

And importantly, this isn't something you achieve by simply telling yourself to “calm down”.

Your body needs experiences that teach it that it has options.

This is one of the foundations of Somalates®

Somalates® is built around the idea of reconnection.

  • Reconnect.

  • Regulate.

  • Restore.

Rather than forcing the body into a particular position or telling it what it should be doing, we use movement as a way of listening.

How does this movement feel?

Where do you notice tension?

Can you breathe here?

Can you make the movement smaller?

What happens if you slow it down?

What changes when you stop trying to make it “perfect”?

These might sound like simple questions.

But they change the relationship you have with your body.

Instead of constantly correcting your body, you start communicating with it.

Flexibility isn't just about stretching

When we talk about flexibility, we often think about muscles.

Can I touch my toes?

Can I open my hips?

Can I rotate my spine?

But there is another kind of flexibility that can be just as important:

How flexible are you in the way you respond to sensation, movement and stress?

Can you soften when you don't need to brace?

Can you move from tension into ease?

Can you tolerate a little sensation without immediately trying to escape it?

Can you change the intensity of a movement?

Can you slow down?

Can you explore something differently?

This is where Somalates® moves beyond traditional ideas of flexibility.

We're not simply trying to make your body more flexible.

We're helping you develop more choice within your body.

Awareness before correction

One of the principles behind Somalates® is:

Awareness before correction.

Instead of immediately thinking:

“My shoulders are too tense.”

You might simply notice:

“I'm holding tension in my shoulders.”

That's a subtle but important shift.

You're no longer judging your body.

You're observing it.

And observation creates information.

Perhaps your shoulders soften when you exhale.

Perhaps they change when you move your arms.

Perhaps you notice that you've been holding your breath.

Perhaps a smaller movement feels better.

There isn't necessarily something to “fix”.

There's something to notice and explore.

Movement becomes information

This is another key part of Somalates®.

Movement is information.

Your body is constantly giving you feedback.

Your breathing.

Your muscle tone.

Your balance.

Your rhythm.

Your range of movement.

Your facial expression.

The way you brace.

The way you release.

Instead of overriding those signals, Somalates® encourages you to become curious about them.

And curiosity is powerful.

Because when we stop judging every sensation as good or bad, right or wrong, we create space for exploration.

Why small movements can make a big difference

Somalates® doesn't rely on pushing harder, stretching further or making every movement bigger.

Sometimes the most useful movement is tiny.

A gentle pelvic shift.

A slow spinal rotation.

Rocking through the feet.

A subtle change in your breathing.

Moving your head and eyes.

Feeling your weight move from one side of the body to the other.

These small movements give you the opportunity to notice subtle changes.

And that's important because you can't change what you can't sense.

The more you notice, the more choices you have.

And the more choices you have, the more adaptable your movement can become.

From performance to perception

Traditional exercise often asks:

“Can you do it?”

Somalates® also asks:

“What do you notice while you're doing it?”

That's a very different experience.

You don't have to perform the movement perfectly.

You don't have to force yourself into a deeper stretch.

You don't have to override discomfort because the instructor told you to go further.

You can adapt.

You can pause.

You can make it smaller.

You can change your breathing.

You can choose another option.

That's not doing less.

That's developing agency within movement.

And this is particularly relevant in midlife

Our bodies change throughout our lives.

And during midlife, those changes can become particularly noticeable.

Your recovery may change.

Your energy may fluctuate.

Your joints may feel different.

Your muscles may need more attention.

Your stress response may feel different.

Your body may simply not respond in the way it did in your twenties or thirties.

That doesn't mean your body is failing you.

It means your relationship with your body may need to evolve.

Instead of constantly asking:

“How can I get my old body back?”

Perhaps we can start asking:

“How can I understand the body I have today?”

That is a very Somalates® question.

You don't need to reset yourself

You don't need to constantly fix yourself.

You don't need another complicated routine telling you that your nervous system is broken.

And you certainly don't need to spend your life chasing the perfect state of calm.

Your nervous system is doing its job.

The invitation is to become better at listening to it.

To recognise when you're activated.

To recognise when you're holding.

To recognise when you need movement.

To recognise when you need stillness.

To experiment.

To adapt.

To find your way back to yourself.

Because perhaps nervous-system wellbeing isn't about being permanently regulated.

Perhaps it's about becoming more adaptable, more aware and more able to move between different states.

And that's what we explore through Somalates®.

Not resetting the body.

Not fixing the body.

Reconnecting with it.

Because when you can feel more, you have more information.

When you have more information, you have more choice.

And when you have more choice, you have the possibility of responding differently.

Somalates®: Helping your body find its balance.

Reconnect. Regulate. Restore.

Your nervous system doesn’t need resetting… it might just need more flexibility...
