Pilates After 45: 5 Amazing Benefits for Your Body, Mind & Midlife
There’s something rather special happening at my Bulkington Pilates classes.
Yes, we move. Yes, we strengthen. Yes, we work those muscles!
But there’s so much more to Pilates than the exercises themselves.
It’s about feeling more connected to your body, moving with confidence and giving yourself an hour in the week that is completely yours.
And as women, particularly once we reach our 40s, 50s and beyond, what our bodies need from exercise can start to change.
We may notice that recovery takes a little longer. We might feel stiffer when we get up in the morning. Our strength, balance and posture can change. Hormonal changes can affect our bodies in ways we weren't expecting.
This is where Pilates can be such a wonderful form of movement.
1. Pilates helps you build strength
One of the biggest benefits of Pilates is its ability to develop functional strength using controlled, purposeful movement.
Rather than simply focusing on how much you can lift or how hard you can push, Pilates encourages you to develop strength alongside control, stability and awareness.
For women over 45, maintaining muscle strength is particularly important as part of healthy ageing.
We use our muscles every single day getting out of a chair, carrying shopping, climbing stairs, picking things up from the floor and simply moving through life.
Pilates gives you an opportunity to keep building that strength in a supportive environment.
And don't be fooled by the slow, controlled movements.
You may discover muscles you didn't know you had!
2. Pilates can improve balance, posture and body awareness
How often do you actually think about the way you stand, walk or move?
Probably not very often.
Pilates encourages you to become more aware of your alignment and how your body moves.
Through controlled exercises, you learn to notice things like your posture, breathing, pelvic position and how you distribute your weight.
That increased body awareness can carry over into everyday life.
You may find yourself sitting differently at your desk, standing taller, moving more confidently or simply becoming more aware of what your body is telling you.
And balance matters too.
Maintaining strength, coordination and balance becomes increasingly important as we get older and Pilates gives us plenty of opportunities to work on all three.
3. Pilates supports your core and pelvic floor
You’ll hear the word core a lot in Pilates.
But your core isn't simply about having visible abdominal muscles.
Your deep core muscles work with your diaphragm, back muscles and pelvic floor to help support and stabilise your body.
Pilates can help you develop greater awareness and control of these muscles through breathing and precise movement.
For women over 45, this can be particularly valuable as our bodies change throughout midlife.
It's not about trying to achieve a “flat stomach”.
It's about developing a strong, supportive centre that helps you move well.
4. Pilates can improve mobility and help you feel less stiff
One of the things I hear from women all the time is:
“I just don't feel as flexible as I used to.”
And that's completely understandable.
Our bodies change as we age, and factors such as how much we move during the day, previous injuries, lifestyle and hormonal changes can all influence how mobile we feel.
Pilates takes your joints and body through controlled ranges of movement while encouraging you to move with awareness rather than forcing flexibility.
The aim isn't to make everyone super bendy.
It's to help you feel more comfortable and confident in your own body.
Because being able to reach, twist, bend, get down to the floor and get back up again matters far more than touching your toes!
5. Pilates is good for your mind as well as your body
And this is perhaps my favourite benefit.
Pilates gives you permission to stop.
For one hour, you get to step away from your to-do list, your work, your family responsibilities and everything else competing for your attention.
You breathe.
You move.
You focus on what your body is doing.
And you spend time with other women.
That combination of movement, concentration, breathing and connection can make Pilates feel like so much more than exercise.
You leave class having done something positive for your body but often feeling better mentally too.
Why women love Bulkington Pilates
This is exactly why I love teaching my Bulkington Pilates classes.
We're not there to compete with the person next to us.
We're not trying to look like an Instagram fitness model.
And you certainly don't need to be “good at Pilates” before you come along!
My classes are designed to be welcoming, friendly and accessible, with options to adapt exercises to your own body and ability.
Some women come because they want to get stronger.
Some want to improve their mobility.
Some want to support their posture and balance.
Some simply want an hour away from the demands of everyday life.
And many come for all of those reasons.
There's also something lovely about moving together as a group.
You start as a room full of individuals and, over time, you become a community.
Pilates isn't about turning back the clock
I don't believe we need to exercise to try to become the woman we were at 25.
Our bodies aren't failing us because they're changing.
Midlife is a different chapter.
The goal is to build a body that supports the life you're living now — strong, mobile, capable and connected.
That's what Pilates can help you do.
And that's what I want my Bulkington classes to be about.
Moving better. Feeling stronger. Looking after yourself. And enjoying the process.
